Chinese Vase Still Life

pic name pic name pic name

I first saw this over at Deep Space Sparkle and decided to give it a go with Grade 1's as a part of our still life unit.  Luckily I was living in Cambodia at the time so I had lots of samples of blue and white Chinese style pottery to show the kids.  We looked carefully at the designs and looked for clues that would tell us something about the culture of the people who made them.  Dragons and chinese writing were a big clue! ;)

The vases were painted first (lots of talk about curving the horizontal lines in the designs to make it look 3D) and set aside while I gave several lessons about overlapping and "painting exactly what you see, even if you think it looks weird" before I put fresh flowers on every table and we embarked on the final pieces.  The whole thing took 3-4 art classes of 45 minutes each.

Art songs and videos

I've been using Greg Percy's "Songs in the Key of Art" in my art room for years.  I've made a few PowerPoints to go along with some of the songs, but I always wished there were music videos to go with them and haven't found time to make them myself.   I hopped on Youtube yesterday afternoon to see if someone beat me to it...sure enough, I found videos of the two songs I use the most, Secondary Samba and Red Yellow Blues.  Hooray for YouTube and horray for art teachers who share!

And here's another Primary Colors video by OK Go-- the kinders are entranced by this one (and so am I...)

PYP Visual Art Central Ideas

The central idea genie
I hate coming up the right wording for with central ideas, especially for Units Outside the Programme Of Inquiry.  It's hard when you don't have a team to bounce ideas off of.  Anyway, I always wished that there was a Central Idea Bank where a PYP art teacher could go to "steal" a central idea and tweak it to fit their needs.

So I did it.  Ta da!! Art related central ideas, cut and pasted from schools all over the world, in one place.  Most are How We Express Ourselves.  Maybe one day I'll divide them up by Transdisciplinary theme...or site the school where they're from (oops)...or write the grade levels or throw in the lines of inquiry.  But this will do for now. *sigh*

Map of My World (from a kindergartener's point of view)

The point of the project was to make a personal map based on important people and things in their lives.   This was part of an integrated "How We Organize Ourselves" unit with the classroom teachers, the central idea was: "Tools can be used to help us take a physical or mental journey."  The tool in this case of course, was a map.

The main features are a family drawing,  a drawing of their home or an important place in their life, and a drawing of a favorite food or hobby.  After everything was glued on they could add roads, bridges and anything else that would connect the important features.

What an overly ambitious project for the first kinder project of the year-- cutting and pasting and sponge painting and keeping track of everyone's cut out pieces...yeesh! In retrospect, this would be perfect for 1st or 2nd grade-- or even at the end of the the year in kindergarten.

I was inspired by this super cool site where you can make your own map:
http://www.kidlandia.com and I had fun making one for myself.  Would be a very fun digital project to do with smaller groups of older kids or one-on-one with the little guys.

silly color mixing video

is this video a little bit ridiculous?  yes.  do the characters have weird accents? yes.  is the song a little annoying?  yep.  did my kinders love it and make me replay it many times yesterday?  I think you know the answer.  they love it when the koala shakes his booty along with singing the secondary color. ;)

classroom management

For my little speed demon workers, I have them choose from 3 things-- free draw, read a book, and do a job.  Free draw is using re-used paper and crayons, reading a book is sitting quietly in our groovy little book corner, and doing a job is usually sharpening pencils.  I have tiny pencil sharpeners that are...silent...:).

Anything more interesting does in fact make them rush through their projects to get to the fun stuff, so I choose my free time activities carefully.

this pretty much covers everything
