Jasper Johns Mixed Media Letters

I started a quick Jasper Johns exploration with a Visible Thinking Routine called Zoom In. Instead of showing a whole Jasper Johns painting, I presented the kids with this but of one-- it stirred up a lot of questions!

What do you think this is? What makes you say that?

What do you think it is now? How did it change?  What do you wonder about the rest of it?

What about now? How did your thinking change?  Why?

POW! Jasper Johns' complete work (cue oohs and aahs)

  1. How dod you do Zoom In for that particular painting? I just started a Jasper Johns unit last week and this would be perfect for my students.

    1. Hi Laura! It was super easy, I just popped the image into a PowerPoint slideshow and copied it onto 4 slides. I cropped the each image differently on each slide so that more of the painting was exposed on each one. I have friends that use Notebook (for Smartboard) and that works well too.
