Rock sculptures

Transdisciplinary Theme: Sharing the Planet

Central Idea: Rocks and sand are in our natural environment and we use, value and interact with them in a variety of ways.

Visual Arts Line of Inquiry: How artists use the local natural environment

The latest Sharing the Planet unit for kindergarten is perfect for our rocky, sandy location.  We took a look at the work of artist Darly Maddeaux.  He does amazing work precariously balancing rocks without any armature or adhesive.  The kids were amazed.  After a frustrating first class, we did use some adhesive, plasticine clay.  It worked very well-- as a matter of fact when one of the kinder teachers saw our sculptures, he said we should use cement and place the finished pieces around the school grounds. Cement with 5 year olds-- he is a brave man.
