Tingatinga is a painting style that developed in the second half of the 20th century in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania
and later spread to most East Africa. Tingatinga paintings are one of
the most widely represented forms of tourist-oriented art in Tanzania,
Kenya and neighboring countries. The genre is named after its founder, Tanzanian painter
Edward Said Tingatinga. (from Wikipedia)
We were extremely fortunate to have two of Edward Said Tingatinga's sons (who are also
Tingatinga artists) from Uganda come to visit our community. Two lucky second grade classes had a visit and a demonstration, now they are working on their own Tingatinga style paintings.
There is also a cartoon called Tingatinga tales from Disney/BBC. There are many youtube clips of the show- -the kids love the lively African music and the vibrant illustrations.

Opening night of the Tingatinga exhibit was also last night, and I bought a lovely piece with three giraffes. We can't wait to get it home and framed!
