Love Where You Live: Pop Art

An important component in the PYP is the appreciation of the host country culture.  Many of the students at international schools are transient, changing countries every few years.  Few people in the world have the opportunity to be immersed in a different culture while studying it, so international teachers need to take advantage of host country culture in any way possible.  Four years in Cambodia went by in a flash!

When I did Pop Art with the Grade 4's and 5's in Phnom Penh, we talked about people and iconic images that we saw every day in one way or another,  Angkor Wat was a big one, so was Independence Monument-- it sits in the middle of the city in honor of Cambodia's independence from France in 1953.

To create these Pop Art pieces, students used FotoFlexer to make line drawings of photos that represented typical Cambodia.  Once the line drawings were printed, copied and cut, the kids used florescent tempera to paint carefully.  They worked in groups to glue all the bits onto large pieces of cardboard.

We completed 6 in all-- with varying sizes, colors, and subjects.  I left them on the walls in my old school but I wish I had taken one with me to hang in my house here in Saudi. :)
