Radial Designs

The Grade 1 students are doing a unit on Patterns and I thought this was a great way to introduce them to the concept of radial designs.  They were handed a piece of square paper with a circle and a cross through the middle-- the first group used blank pages and had a much harder time making things symmetrical.

I demonstrated making a radial design by starting with a stamp in the middle, then having the class repeat with me as I stamped around the middle with one stamp, "Up, down, side, side."

Then I would turn the paper a little bit and get a new stamp and do it again, "Up, down, side, side."

This was repeated again and again until the whole paper was full.   I would love to have the kids add some detail with a Sharpie when the paint it dry...we'll see.
