Kinder Box Monsters

What fun we've had making these! We used the same technique as the Oaxacan Animalitos I made with last year's group.  No painting, just using colored paper with paper mache paste.  No googly eyes, the faces were much more expressive when the kids drew them on paper and cut them out.

Phase one was choosing boxes and inquiring into what ways they could stand alone.  When they found a position they liked, the children taped them together with masking tape.

Phase two was the paper mache.  Again, I am the biggest fan ever of Art Paste, it is amazing stuff.  No more boiling flour and water for me!! Best paper mache technique-- make a "paper sandwich" (a dab of paste in the palm is the bread, piece of paper is the meat, dab of paste on top is the bread again).  I do a little chant with the kids as they rub the piece together to get it nice and saturated: "Rub a dub dub.  Rub a dub dub.  Rub a dub dub dub dub dub dub."  I'm 90% sure it's a chant that was embedded in my brain from from one of my daughter's Dora the Explorer videos.

Phase three was drawing a plan for what the monster was going to look like.  How many eyes?  Legs?  etc.  It will be interesting to see how the finished products differ from the plan.

Phase four was drawing the faces, cutting and pasting them on, adding the tempera varnish and a little glitter.

Phase five was the decoration-- I used the hot glue gun and called them up one by one for the antennae and pom poms, the rest was stuck on with regular glue.
