Hooked on a Feeling II

 

I used some slightly different teaching methods for this project this year and I was really pleased with the results.  Here's a link to the same project with last year's group.

We started out with a Sesame Street video with the Alvin Ailey dance theater troupe expressing feelings through dance.  We talked about how you can also express feelings through visual art.  I showed a slideshow of various non objective paintings and the kids discussed how each painting made them feel.  Each child decided on one feeling and tried to draw it with oil pastel using shapes and lines.  I also took a photo of each child lying on the floor and expressing their chosen feeling with their body.  The name of the feeling they chose was written on the back of the paper.  The kids painted it all with cake tempera and left it until the next class.

I printed an A4 sheet with the feeling they chose typed out in various fonts.  This was ready and waiting for them to cut when they arrived for class #2.    I also cut their pictures out for them as this was a source of lots of drama for last years' group (the photos are pretty small and hard to cut).

And there you have it-- I think they did a pretty nice job expressing their chosen emotions, don't you?
